Koufonisia 

Koufonisia is a small island that is part of the Small Cyclades, located between Naxos and Amorgos. Koufonisia actually consists of two main islands: Ano (or Pano) Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi, separated by a narrow strait approximately 200 meters wide.


Ano Koufonisi

Ano Koufonisi is the only inhabited island of the complex, with an area of about 5.7 square kilometers and a population of around 366 residents. The main settlement is the picturesque Chora, known for its whitewashed houses and narrow alleys. Locals are traditionally engaged in fishing and, more recently, tourism.

 Kato Koufonisi

Kato Koufonisi is nearly uninhabited, with only a few fishermen’s houses that are mostly used during the summer months. The island offers peaceful beaches and is ideal for day trips from Ano Koufonisi.

 

 

 Beaches and Natural Sights

Koufonisia are renowned for their stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters. On Ano Koufonisi, popular beaches include Pori, Fanos, Italida, Ammos, and Finikas. Notable natural sights include the “Natural Pool” and the “Devil’s Eye” rock formations.

History and Culture

Koufonisia have a long history, with archaeological findings dating back to prehistoric times. Nearby Keros island, although uninhabited, is home to significant artifacts from the Cycladic civilization.

Events and Local Life

The island preserves its traditions with festivals like that of Saint George, the island’s patron saint,  the celebration of the Virgin Mary on Kato Koufonisi on 15 of August and the fisherman’s feast  on the port of the island .These events feature local food, live music, and traditional dances offering visitors an authentic Greek island experience.
